Youth Programming
The Youth Programming Committee plans and implements activities, programs, events, and projects for youth in the neighborhood. The activities we plan usually have an art or activism focus and try to get youth working with positive adult role models.
The Committee Chair is Beth Barbush – ebarbush@gmail.com
Current projects of the Youth Programming Committee:
- Remington Youth Community Radio (RYCR) is a FREE radio documentary, community building and youth development workshop organized by Art on Purpose. It meets every Tuesday evening from 5:30 – 7:30 at Kromer Hall in the Church of the Guardian Angel. This class is for youth ages 9 and up who are interested in learning about their neighborhood and documenting it through drawing, writing, photography and story telling. Students are learning how to interview and edit audio stories so they can make ready for radio sound pieces. They may come knocking soon on your door to ask you to share a neighborhood story or ask your opinion on a community issue. If you would like more information, know a youth that would like to be involved or would like to be involved yourself….(be interviewed! help with the class! mentor a radio student! Lend your photography or audio skills! assist with class meals!) please contact RYCR program director Beth Barbush 410-322-7080 ebarbush@gmail.com
- Porch Art – GRIA board member Beth Barbush started “Porch Art” 2 years ago. Each Tuesday evening in the Spring and Summer Months neighbors young and old gather at 2942 Huntingdon to make art and craft projects for fun! Please send Beth ideas and/or donations of supplies as she prepares for the Spring Season.
- Homework Club (HWC) – is funded by the Episcopal Diocese and organized by Rebeckah Lin. It meets Monday nights from 6:00 – 8:00 at the Church of the Guardian Angel in Remington. Over the years, HWC has grown to include nearly 20 students and volunteer tutors every week. Most of the students live within a few blocks of the church, although some come from slightly farther away. Students range in age from 2nd through 11th grade. Many of them have been coming to HWC every week for three or more years. Volunteer tutors are a mix of young professionals, graduate, and undergraduate students.

Past Projects of the Youth Programming Committee:
- Remington Youth Band: The Remington Band is a music program that met once a week during 2008. It allowed youth to learn how to play instruments such as drums, guitar, and keyboards. The group practiced songs together and worked toward playing in neighborhood performances. The instruments for the band were purchased through a grant from Youth As Resources, a youth-led non-profit in Baltimore. We are looking for instructors who would like to donate their time to help the Youth Band start up again.
- Maps on Purpose – An Art on Purpose Project
